For “Iterating My Way Into Oblivion,” Zanni says he purposefully references George Orwell’s 1984 by “speculating on the relationships between creative energies and corporate policies evoking the morphing of enlightened arcana into established powers.”Which is probably why the pig’s head and the various animal hats show up from time to time. The jury’s still out on the Diet Coke can.
The Columbus Park news conference is being convened by Jim Allen, a self-identified Vice Lords Nation member. Allen is also identified as the “almighty minister” of an organization called Tha Movement. The group’s logo features several gang signs in the center surrounded by a circle bearing the message: “Stop the violence. One love.”
An announcement on the blog for Tha Movement says members of the “Lords, Disciples, Kings, Stones, Hustlers, Souls, Cobras, etc.” are expected to be at the news conference.
The group is protesting what they call the “unconstitutional, guilty before innocent, premeditated arrest and indictment by Chicago Police hearsay and propaganda tactics,” in regard to the threat to use the RICO statute at the “‘secret trick meeting’ the Chicago Police and others held with whom they deemed to be top gang leaders.
“Tha Movement believes this to be nothing more than the continuation of former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge style tactics of harassment,” the announcement says. Burge was convicted this past June of lying about torturing criminal suspects into confessions into the 1970s and 80s.
Can state governments deliver more services with constrained budgets? How can social media and collaborative software be used to engage citizens and lead to better policy decisions or investments? Can open government lead to better e-government?
For years, Americans have had their phone calls about credit card bills and broken cell phones handled by people in the Philippines or India. But American firms are starting to bring call centers back to the U.S. — and this time around, they are hiring more people to work in their own homes.
Ten years ago, it made a lot of sense to outsource these jobs overseas. But that’s changing. Increasingly, companies that want to outsource their customer service jobs are happy with these domestic arrangements.
High inflation and double-digit annual raises in some sectors are pushing up the cost of labor in India. At the same time wages in the U.S. are falling and companies are rethinking the trade-offs associated with outsourcing.
…while I understand the importance of having a #FollowFriday hashtag, I am more interested in clusters of conversation rather than a few random names every weekend. To that end, I’ve developed these four lists on TweepML to suggest you follow on followfridays.
Years that are evenly divisible by 100 are not leap years, unless they are also evenly divisible by 400, in which case they are leap years. For example, 1600 and 2000 were leap years, but 1700, 1800 and 1900 were not. Similarly, 2100, 2200, 2300, 2500, 2600, 2700, 2900 and 3000 will not be leap years, but 2400 and 2800 will be. By this rule, the average number of days per year will be 365 + 1/4 − 1/100 + 1/400 = 365.2425, which is 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes, and 12 seconds. The Gregorian calendar was designed to keep the vernal equinox on or close to March 21, so that the date of Easter celebrated on the Sunday after the 14th day of the Moon—i.e. a full moon—that falls on or after March 21 remains correct with respect to the vernal equinox. The vernal equinox year is about 365.242374 days long and increasing.
Internationally recognized as one of the most original digital artists in the world today, his web sites have always been at the vanguard of taking the internet to the next level. A pioneer in multimedia experimental web-art, he first started exhibiting his artwork online in 1997.
In 2000 Carlson published the legendary web sites Virtual OM and Larrycarlson.com which featured his original full screen psychotropic entertainment for the online masses around the world. For the past five years Yahoo! directory has ranked Larry Carlson as the number one computer artist in the world.
International newspapers like London’s Guardian, Montreal’s Mirror, and Istanbul’s Vatan News have done features on his awe-inspiring artwork. His work has also been featured in US weekly, High Times, Vice, Juxtapoz, NY Arts and Lucky magazines.Larry Carlson has exhibited his artwork in the U.S., Brazil, Sweden, France, and Germany.
The Museum of Modern Art in New York exhibited some of his collage art books in the show Book/Shelf, and his movies were shown at Alex Grey’s COSM gallery. In 2008, Portland, Oregon’s KBOO 90.7 fm hosted two Larry Carlson music specials featuring his surreal soundtracks.
He also puts on live experimental video shows, providing visuals for major electronic music events in New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Amsterdamn.
Recently Larry Carlson has been using social networking sites Facebook and Twitter for his new experimental “text-art”. Mixing up uncommon typographical symbols and international languages he has been pioneeriing a new form of “Facebook update-art” and “TwitterArt” and in the process turning status updates into “art”.
In 2005, Koch Industries bought Georgia-Pacific, one of the world’s largest plywood manufacturers and a major formaldehyde producer. The company has donated to both Vitter and Inhofe [2].
In a letter to federal health authorities sent last December, the company’s vice-president of environmental affairs wrote that “the company ‘strongly disagrees’ with the N.I.H. panel’s conclusion that formaldehyde should be treated as a known human carcinogen,” reported The New Yorker.
The National Cancer Institute’s director, Harold Varmus, told The New Yorker that at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center—where he used to work and where Koch donated $40 million dollars and serves on the board—it wasn’t uncommon for donors to have large business interests, but “the one thing we wouldn’t tolerate in our board members is tobacco.” Varmus was “surprised,” however, when The New Yorker told him about Koch Industries’ stance on formaldehyde.
We’ve asked Koch Industries to comment the matter but have not yet heard back.
A series of reliefs cover the walls in an obscure corner of a crypt in the Hathor Temple in Dendera. One in particular caught the eye of a visiting Norwegian electrical engineer. He stared at it not sure he believed his own eyes. What he was certain he’d found was an Egyptian depiction of an electric light bulb.
His revelation was called to the attention of other electrical engineers. After studying the relief they agreed that it certainly seemed to depict an electric light. Comparing the design to types of bulbs they reached a consensus: ancient Egyptians had working bulbs called “Crookes tubes.”
“When the [Crookes] tube is in operation, the ray originates where the cathode electrical wire enters the tube to the opposite end. In the temple picture, the electron beam is represented as an outstretched serpent. The tail of the serpent begins where a cable from the energy box enters the tube, and the serpent’s head touches the opposite end. In Egyptian art, the serpent was the symbol of divine energy . . .” – Chris Dunn, “The Giza Power Plant.”
All involved agree that Minelli, Lucky and Judy have benefited from good timing and good press.
On some days, as many as 300 people inquire about taking in the animals, which will all be adopted together. They should be healthy enough for their new home in about three weeks.
Why did so many people come to the rescue?
Fling thinks it may be because so many animals are lost each day. About 60,000 puppies and kittens are born in the Dallas area every year, and most of them don’t have anywhere to go.
A computer program calculates a person’s social score at the end of each day. That score determines a person’s dividend and share price, based on an intricate formula determined by the Empire Avenue brain trust.
Having a high stock price and a high dividend creates wealth for shareholders, and makes a stock even more attractive.
Aside from an ego boost, Empire Avenue hopes to create a real payoff for having virtual wealth. In the future, anyone will be able to spend their Empire Avenue dollars, known as eves, in exchange for real cash discounts at partner companies. The Empire Avenue rewards program was launched this week, with three participating businesses.
In 2002, scientists carried out an amazing experiment, which showed that particles of light “photons” knew — in advance −- what their distant twins would do in the future. They tested the communication between pairs of photons — whether to be either a wave or a particle. Researchers stretched the distance one of the photons had to take to reach its detector, so that the other photon would hit its own detector first. The photons taking this path already finished their journeys -− they either collapse into a particle or don’t before their twin encounters a scrambling device. Somehow, the particles acted on this information before it happened, and across distances instantaneously as if there was no space or time between them. They decided not to become particles before their twin ever encountered the scrambler. It doesn’t matter how we set up the experiment. Our mind and its knowledge is the only thing that determines how they behave. Experiments consistently confirm these observer-dependent effects.
More recently (Science 315, 966, 2007), scientists in France shot photons into an apparatus, and showed that what they did could retroactively change something that had already happened. As the photons passed a fork in the apparatus, they had to decide whether to behave like particles or waves when they hit a beam splitter. Later on – well after the photons passed the fork – the experimenter could randomly switch a second beam splitter on and off. It turns out that what the observer decided at that point, determined what the particle actually did at the fork in the past. At that moment, the experimenter chose his history.
The incident did not take place during a traditional bullfight but during a contest of “recortadores”, in which participants try to avoid the bull while staying as close to it as possible.
Mundotoro, a Spanish website that specialises in bullfighting, said the bull was about to be removed from the arena as it was underperforming when it decided to leap into the crowd.
Such incidents are very unusual at bullfights. Although the animals occasionally manage to clamber over the security barrier they very rarely get into the stands.
Wednesday’s incident came amid intense debate in Spain over the centuries-old tradition of bullfighting in Spain.
Nicoletto da Modena removed the classical vs contemporary or Pagan vs Christian conflict in Dürer’s composition by engraving a version of this scene in 1500, minus the devil and bones, and changing the title to ‘The Judgement of Paris’ the Judgement being a beauty contest between Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, and the result being the Trojan War.
The problem is so dire in Cincinnati that some people with infested apartments have resorted to sleeping on the streets.
Cincinnati created a Bedbug Remediation Commission in 2007 and, like other local and national governments around the world, the city is trying to mobilize strategies to control infestations of the resilient insects, which can hide in almost any crack or crevice and can go a year or more without eating.
